ESL 학습자들은 '부럽다', '질투난다' 표현을 할 때 특히 한국에서 영어 배우는 사람들은 envy 를 떠올리기 쉬운 것 같다. 그나마 조금 자연스럽게 쓰는게 jealous 이다.

I envy you !!

" 너 정말 부럽다 !! " 사실 이런 의미로 envy you 라고 하는 것은... 필리피노가 사용하는 것 외에는 본적이 없다. 아, 딱 한 번 미국 드라마에서 본적 있는 것 같은데, 기억이 나질 않는다. 

I'm jealous !

그나마 많이 쓰이고, 미국 현지에서도 많이 쓰이는 표현인 것 같다. 그런데 오늘 Youtube 를 보다가 더 현실적인 표현을 알게 되었다. 바로 Jelly. 이 유투브를 보다가 I was really jelly 라고 말하는 걸 듣고 " 엥? jelly 라고? 잘못들었나? " 했는데 분명 jelly 였다. 당연히 일반 사전에서는 말이 맞는 뜻이 나오지 않고, slang 카테고리에서 검색해보면 이런 뜻이 존재한다.

오 ! 그러고보니 jealous 로 충분히 말 장난 식으로 만들어 낼 수 있을만한게 jelly 다.

" You know you don't really have that in Korea. People are not grilling burgers outside. But this is what I've been craving lately. The other day my dad was like 'we just, you know, we broke in grills cook up some burgers out' Man I was really jelly." 

한국 사람들은 그릴 갖고 밖에서 버거 굽는 사람 별로 없지. 요즘에 이런 햄버거 진짜 먹고 싶었다니까. 언제 아빠가 그릴 꺼내서 버거 만들어 먹었다고 했을때 아~ 진짜 부러웠다니까.

I was so jealous

ESL learners would come up with this expression envy or jealous when they want to talk about something jealous. Well jealous is the safe to go, it seems.

I envy you !!

I'm so jealous ( of you ) !! Well, saying envy to express this kind of feelings is a little bit awkward since I don't really hear this in American English that much. If my memory serves me right, I think I've heard of it in an American television show but I'm not sure what was it. Anyway... envy you, I'm damn pretty sure I got this a lot from Filipino. They use this a lot. No offence by the way.

I'm jealous !!

This is what I get a lot from here and there. But I bumped into a nice expression today while watching the wave of Youtube videos. It is jelly. I was puzzled by him saying ' I was really jelly ' in the video and I thought ' what the? did he say jelly? did I hear it wrong? ' but it was definitely jelly. So I started to look up the word in the dictionary but to no avail, instead, try to search it in the slang category and I found this one.

Oh! come to think of it, it looks like it does make sense to use jelly instead of jealous. It sounds very similar in a casual way.

You don't really have a grill in Korea. People in Korea are not cooking burgers on a grill outside. But this burger is what I've wanted to eat lately. When my father said that he grilled some burgers, man I was really jealous !
