jog your memory

While I was watching Netflix, I heard the character said " Don't you recognize me? oh this picture would help you remember... " kind of nuiance, pushing forward a picture of him...

You don't know me? Well this one might jog your memory

I can guess the jog might kinda mean " help someone remember something " without looking up a dictionary because I feel the context. To improve English sense, If you don't get this, always try to guess the meaning as much as you can, basing on the context.

jog means exactly the jogging you might be thinking of right now. But the running activity is the first listing in the meaning list, the second one is nudge or knock slightly. nudge is a light touch or push, or a gentle prod with one's elbow or finger tip and knock means the knock as "knock knock". Then let's conceptual think of the word in a primitive way. If you nudge a brain, it means you prod and knock the brain, that's stimulating it. Stimulating a brain means helping a brain work better. So if you say something jog your memory, then it stimulates the memory, so these meanings can be popped out of jog !

    • help someone remember something
    • rouse or stimulate some memories

Don't memorize it, just feel it. I think nudge is the essential word to understand jog your memory expression. That's why I got these images.

Helped it? and below is an interesting flyer for luring people who often have a hard time remembering something. It looks like from Australia. It's definitely used in American English as well as Australia. ( Probably in England, cuz aussies use it )
