Lead someone on

This expression can be used to indicate the deceiving behavior that makes someone believe that somebody is attracted to him or her. Imagine you recently met someone and went on a date once or twice. That person seems pretty nice but when it comes to the boy/girl friend material, you don't think you can go on a serious relationship with the person. But losing touch with that person is somewhat you don't wanna do, and you even wish that person could keep loving you. So you deliberately made some moves that gave that person false hope. Regrettably, the victim would think that I got a chance to develop the relationship further because I'm able to go on a date with my love and sometime a few touches like holding hands, a brief kiss on a chick, and etc are allowed.

This is exactly when leading someone on makes sense.

To put it in disgrace manner => "have someone on the hook", "played with someone's heart"

To put it in a dictionary manner => "mislead or deceive someone"

Have you heard the song, Oops I did it again by Britney Spears released in 2000? This is the perfect example of leading someone on.

" I think I did it again. I made you believe, we are more than just friends. "

" It might seem like a crush, but it doesn't mean I'm serious. "

If you google "lead someone on", you're going to see these images below.

You were so lead on.

You can use this as a verb, but also can use it like a noun or adjective.

"Dude, I met this girl a month ago, we had dates a few times but it turned out that she had a boyfriend"

"Man, you were so lead on"
